Motor Cycle Helmet Safety
The Department of Transport recently announced (July 2010) new safety ratings for motorcycle helmets with the aim of giving motorcyclists better advice and more information on choosing a helmet.
The new ratings will be published on the website of the Government’s Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP). The website will also have more information about safety helmets, include demonstrations of the tests that were carried out and give advice on how to ensure that a helmet fits properly.
The Department of Transport estimates that 50 deaths each year could be prevented if all riders wore the safest helmets available.

Legal Aid Cuts
An article in The Law Society Gazette this week (July 2010) highlighted concerns in the legal profession over mounting speculation that the Ministry of Justice plans to cut the £2.1bn legal aid budget by half a billion. Legal aid for suspects at police stations, magistrates courts and crown courts are believed to be the particular target of cuts with fears that this will lead to a loss of solicitors firms able to provide a legal aid service . Other proposals could see the removal of legal aid for such matters as assistance with property and maintenance disputes after divorce.
